Charlie's it is

Well, I kinda made the decision a while ago but never actually managed to sit down and write anything much about it. I will be working at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital next year (provided I pass my exams!).

SCGH, aka 'Charlie's' is one of those hospitals that were built in the 70s and have areas that look like they haven't changed at all since then. Some parts of the hospital smell, some parts look really nice, and other bits look like they're falling apart, but generally it's a good place to be.

The other choices, Royal Perth and Fremantle Hospital, had too many cons that outweighed the pros of choosing either of them. RPH has an awesome location, right smack bang in the middle of the city, but it's future is very much in doubt. There are plans to demolish it and move the campus to a new super-hospital in the south, in Murdoch. Obviously this is going to be some time in the future, but it definitely affected my choice. Living north of the river, and with petrol the price it is at the moment - I didn't think it would have been a good choice for me. Added to that the fact that RPH are stoically sticking with only four terms next year, and it makes it difficult to mount a case for going there. The only thing is that some refurbished parts of the hospital are really nice.

Fremantle Hospital was just too far away again. It takes me an hour to get there by train, and about 45 minutes by car. It is also a very laid-back hospital, which is nice when you're a student, but I think I need a little bit more stimulation so I can learn more as an intern.

Charlie's is a nice balance between location, choice of terms (5) and also friends. Most of my mates are going with me to Charlie's so it will be fun hanging out on the ward next year with them.
